Terberg introduces the new RT382 – 4x4 with hydraulically sideshifting cabin or fixed outboard cabin
Thursday, March 23rd 2006

We have now completed the delivery of all units to Barloworld for the new Stora Enso operation at the Port of Tilbury. This order sees the introduction of the RT382 with the unique hydraulically sideshifting cabin that has been specifically designed to provide the operator with sufficient visibility when handling the SECU* boxes (*width 3.60m / length 13.80 m).
The sideshifting movement can easily be operated by the driver from within the cabin with almost no interruption to the operation and provides the required visibility, increasing productivity and greatly reduces the risk of damage, especially when using the push-type operation driving backwards into the ship.
- The new side shifting cabin makes for a tractor which is equally capable of efficiently handling the heaviest Ro-Ro cargo with normal width of 2500-2600mm as for the handling of the special SECU-boxes which are 3600mm wide.
- With the cab in full offset position is the outside of the cab max. 50mm’s wider than the Stora-box allowing for perfect visibility. The offset cab is well protected with heavy-duty protection bars and with a system, which allows the cabin to retract when the force from outside is above a preset value.
- With the cab in full non-offset position is the cab well within the tractor width of 2570mm. This means that all normal Ro-Ro cargo can be handled in the ship lanes without any problems.
- It is also possible to shift and drive the cabin in any position between its most inward and outward position allowing for more manoeuvring space when placing the Stora-boxes close to the wall of the ship.
- It is also possible to get the RT382 supplied with the cabin placed permanently in its most outward position (the so-called “fixed outboard cabin” option).
- The cabin on the Terberg RT382 is exactly the same as on the well proven TT/RT xx2 range and is thus equipped with the best possible ergonomical design available on the market. The cabin is equipped with a standard low noise level, generous heater and (optionally) a very effective air-conditioning system which create the perfect working environment for the driver, allowing him to make long and productive days without driver fatigue.
- The cabin on the Terberg RT382 is as a standard equipped with a newly designed air suspension. The new cab air suspension provides a superb driver comfort and combines this with a good feel for the driver what the tractor is doing. This feature is also available as an option on the rest of the TT/RT range as well as on the YT-range.
- The side shifting and the fixed outboard cabin on the RT382 are standard equipped with a cab tilt system with a combined electrical and manual operation possibility.
- Same excellent unobstructed view all around and on all the corners and sides of the tractor as standard on all the Terberg tractors.
- When moving the cab (either in or outward) is there a audible and visual warning system installed to prevent dangerous situations.
- The RT382 with side shifting and the fixed outboard cabin are equipped with generously designed and safely protected open profile anti-slip access steps and handrails to the cab and the platform behind the cab which create and easy and safe entrance to the cab or the platform behind the cab.
- The Terberg RT382 is equipped with the latest generation Cummins industrial 11 Litre engine, the QSM11 (see attached acrobat files). We install the QSM11-335 which offers a rated power of 250kW (335Hp) @2100 rpm and a peak power of 274kW (367Hp) @ 1800 rpm. The extremely high maximum engine torque is 1704Nm @1100-1400 rpm. This latest generation, state of the art engine has very low fuel consumption figures below 200 gm/kW-hr. The engine has a very modern and clean combustion process and is fully complying with the US EPA/CARB Tier 2 and European Euromot-II regulations as are in force at this moment. By the way all the Terberg equipment being produced for the European market is fully complying to these latest exhaust regulations.
- The engine is as a standard equipped with a isolating cover on the oil sump which effectively reduces the outside noise of the tractor.
- The engine breathes through a generously sized Donaldson 2-stage airfilter with the possibility to install an optional safety element and/or a extra heavy duty cyclone prefilter.
- The engine in the RT382 is for Ro-Ro operations as a standard equipped with an engine brake which allows for a controlled handling of the combination with heavy loads down the ramps. This gives improved driver safety, less brake wear and subsequently less maintenance. The engine brake automatically engages as soon as the transmission is in Lock-Up and the throttle pedal is released.
- The Terberg RT382 is equipped with a standard 350 litres fuel tank which makes for very long intervals between refuelling.
- The Terberg RT382 is equipped with the latest generation fully electronically controlled ZF 6WG260 Ergopower full-powershift transmission offering a standard choice between low speed fixed gears and a standard automatic shift programme. The transmission is fully protected from driver abuse and offers a superior shift quality. The hydraulic system for the gearshifts is working with proportional valves, which allows a very precise control of the clutches. For each gearchange, the control unit performs a monitoring function to ensure the specified shift curve is adhered to, and readjusts the shift pressure applied to the clutches accordingly. This results in smooth gearshifts - even under load - with no traction interrupt. This helps to avoid standstill of the vehicle, sudden load changes and torque peaks under all conditions, for example application on steep ramps/bad road surface with full load.
- The ZF 6WG260 Ergopower is a transmission with a completely new design. The noise level is reduced thanks to helical extra-depth gearing with high levels of tooth flank overlap. Also the housing design was optimised with reduced noise radiation in mind.
- The ZF 6WG260 Ergopower in the Terberg RT382 is as a standard equipped with a Lock-Up clutch active in all gears. Terberg is the only company offering this feature. It creates the ideal heavy duty pulling machine because the fully mechanical connection in Lock-Up mode makes the heat balance much better and (which is even more important) it improves the fuel consumption figures and productivity of the machine.
- The ZF 6WG260 Ergopower transmission is equipped with a standard interaxle differential which creates a standard 1/3 - 2/3 torque split between the front and rear axle. This interaxle differential is equipped with a differential lock which can be switched on while driving and is electronically protected so it will only engage when the engine torque is below 600Nm and the vehicle speed is below 4 km/h.
- The ZF 6WG260 Ergopower transmission is equipped with a standard full flow double filter system which provides the best possible filtration of the transmission fluid and guarantees together with the very efficient cooling system the longest possible transmission life.
- The Terberg RT382 is equipped with a standard brake system with a 4-circuit protection valve, 4x30 Litres air tanks and with large, high capacity diameter 500mm brakes on front and rear axle. This makes sure the tractor with load can be effectively and safely stopped.
- The front axle is a heavy duty Kessler unit which has a 42° wheel lock angle which provides an extremely small turning radius of 7.15 metres (with 3200mm wheelbase). The maximum loading capacity of this axle is 25 Tonnes @10km/h.
- The rear axle is an extreme heavy duty Kessler unit with a pneumatically operated differential lock. The maximum loading capacity of this axle is 48 Tonnes @10km/h.
- The axles are equipped with the latest generation rims complete with 18mm thick centre plates and tubeless mounting of the tyres. The rims have been designed to offer a very good contact between the heel of the tyre and the rim which allows a high torque to be transmitted. This will prevent the tyres from turning/moving on the rims.
- The suspension systems on front and rear axles are build around the well-proven heavy duty 5–leaf parabolic front axle suspension and around the also well-proven fixed and air operated rear axle suspensions of the present RT282 tractors.
- A new chassisframe with a wheelbase of 3600mm has been designed for the side shifting and the fixed outboard cabin. The new chassis can comfortably handle a maximum fifth wheel load of 45 tonnes, a GVW of 58 tonnes, and a GCW up to 230 tonnes for Ro/Ro applications and up to 350 tonnes for MTS applications.
- The hydraulic system on the Terberg RT382 is equipped with a standard 230 litre capacity hydraulic oil tank. This makes sure the tractor can fulfil even the harshest hydraulic requirements and is perfectly matched to operate in combination with the frequently used Liftec translifters.
- The Terberg RT382 is equipped with a standard simple and reliable engine driven hydraulic gear-pump with a high flow capacity for the fifth wheel lift system and the steering system.
- The Terberg RT382 is equipped with an optional heavy duty SAE-C PTO position on the transmission allowing even the biggest pumps to be engine driven (max. capacity 1200Nm).
- Lowest possible maintenance requirements because of maintenance free suspension systems, an absolute minimum number of grease nipples, very long engine oil change intervals up to 700 hours (with Cummins CES20076 approved oil) and long transmission oil change intervals of 1000 hours.
