Terberg Benschop has delivered a Terberg FM2000 8x8, which improves Botaş’ capability to maintain the natural gas network in Turkey in a more environmentally friendly way.  Flaring gas is now no longer needed.

The Terberg, with Enerflex gas compression unit, takes action when a part of a gas pipeline must be closed for maintenance. Botaş has chosen for Terberg because it’s a truck that can, within the laws of Turkey with vehicles up to 32 tons total weight, reach the most inaccessible places. The Terberg FM2000 8x8 can reach any pipe valve in any inhospitable area.

Until now, the gas in the sections which for maintenance were closed off from the network with pipeline valves, was flared. The Terberg however pumps the gas from the closed part to the other side of the valve where the normal pressure (from 60 to 90 bar) still exists. This way no gas is being spilled. The pumping is done with a Caterpillar G3408C gas engine, which uses gas from the pipeline. The V8, with a displacement of 18 litres, produces an output of 317 kW (425 hp). When the gas is pumped out of the section, it is safe to work on this part of the pipeline.

Trusted base
The Terberg FM2000 8x8, with a wheelbase of 6,410 mm, is a solid and reliable carrier for the gas compression unit of Enerflex Ltd., a part of the Canadian Toromont Industries Ltd. The specifications of the vehicle for Botaş correspond with Terberg vehicles which are in use in the Netherlands as 8x8 earth moving tipper chassis. That design proved to meet exactly the needs concerning weight, overhang and space for the gas compression unit. The strong Volvo D13C Diesel, with an output of 420 hp, has no problem at all with the total weight of 32 tons. As an extra, the vehicle is provided with four stamps, to let the installation work stable and in a horizontal position. The added value of Terberg as a supplier was also expressed in the homologation process for Turkey. The engineering department in Benschop took over every concern in that respect from Enerflex. Terberg provided the right weight calculations, the proper documentation and the correct implementation, like approved side skirts, sidelights and rear bumper. The complete vehicle is currently assigned to the end user in Turkey.

Botaş
Botaş is a government agency and was established in 1974 to transport oil through a pipeline from Iraq through Turkey to the Mediterranean Sea. Since 1988 the Turkish company also transports gas in- and outside Turkey. The Botaş gas transport network has grown in recent years to a total length of 11,332 km in 2010.
