Terberg FM trucks with EURO 5 engine

Afbeelding bij Terberg FM trucks with EURO 5 engine At the end of October 2006 Terberg delivered the first FM trucks with the Euro 5 version of the new Volvo D13A engine. It was decided to skip the Euro 4 version, despite the fact that the Euro 5 will not become a legal requirement until October 2009. As a result, Terberg will contribute to a cleaner environment and will limit the number of variants. Using Volvo original components, Terberg was able to respond quickly to requests from the market and the new European emission requirements.

VOLVO D13A EURO 5 ENGINE
The standard engine in the new FM vehicle programme is the Volvo D13A Euro 5, which produces 400 or 440 hp, an increase of 20 hp over the Euro 3 programme.
This new Volvo engine uses SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology, which reduces the emission of harmful substances through catalytic treatment of the exhaust gases.
Using diesel engines with even more effective combustion and exhaust gas treatment results in drastically reduced emissions of oxides of nitrogen and soot particulates.
SCR technology treats exhaust gases by injecting a urea solution (AdBlue) upstream of the silencer containing the catalytic converter and the particulate filter.

The combination of AdBlue and a catalytic converter ensures that nitrogenoxides (NOx) are converted into pure nitrogen and water vapour, substances that occur naturally in the air around us.
AdBlue consumption is approximately 5-6% of the vehicle's fuel consumption.
The difference between Euro 4 and Euro 5 is in the dimensions of the SCR catalytic converter and the amount of AdBlue injected. The external dimensions of the Euro 4 and Euro 5 silencers are identical, so the same amount of space is available. An AdBlue tank and an injection pump are also fitted in addition to the SCR catalytic converter.

The Volvo D13A engine outperforms its predecessor, the D12, in many areas. Its torque reaches 2200 Nm across practically the entire engine speed range. The Volvo D13A's timing gears are at the rear, which gives better airflow along the water-cooled engine, and a 1000 Nm PTO is fitted, also at the rear of the engine. Although the Volvo D13A's cylinder capacity is nearly a litre greater than its predecessor's, the engine delivers better fuel economy thanks to the optimised injection timing that is normally at the expense of the NOx emission. The nitrogenoxides are converted by the exhaust gas treatment system, however.

In addition to the new engine, other enhancements include:

ZF ECOSPLIT GEARBOX
Starting with the Volvo D13A engine, a new type of gearbox (16S2225TO) will be supplied featuring a single-H gearshift pattern and cable gearchange. The gearshift protection and valves have been integrated in a single housing above the transmission, reducing the number of air pipes and optimising reliability. As with the previous transmission, pneumatic gearshift support is used to ensure optimum gearchanging comfort.

ZF AS-TRONIC GEARBOX
The new version of ZF's automatic gearbox (16AS2630TO) has a new gearshift control unit that provides additional functionality. A new gear lever has been introduced at the same time, allowing two gears to be changed with a single movement and an economical gear to be selected by the manual gearshift function. It is also possible to select forward/reverse before the vehicle comes to a stop. The change occurs as soon as the vehicle stops.

LOCK OPERATION
Operation of the many differential locks (depending on the driveline) has been simplified. Whereas all locks could previously be operated separately, now the operation has been significantly simplified. Moving a single switch to its first position engages all longitudinal differential locks, and moving it to the second position engages all transverse differential locks.

In short, the new Terberg FM series, available in 6x4, 6x6, 8x4, 8x6, 8x8, 10x4 and 10x8 driveline configurations, is an innovation incorporating today's technology.
