Terberg Benschop has delivered the first terminal tractor with a Euro 5 diesel engine in the Netherlands. Verzinkerij Heerhugowaard is the first to have it. They use the vehicle to perform to the maximum with the least possible air-pollution, both in the inside and outside area.
Verzinkerij Heerhugowaard is specialized in thermal galvanizing of steel. The company has the longest zinc kettle in the Netherlands (15,6 metre). It is proud of the cooperation with Poedercoating Heerhugowaard, Verzinkerij Kampen and Poedercoating Hoogeveen. They offer the so-called Duplex system, a combination of galvanizing and powder coating. It provides the treated material with durability and a fine appearance. In this process the Terberg terminal tractor takes care of the moving of trailers and flatbed containers on the outer terrain, and the transport to the place where the steel is galvanized. So the vehicle runs both out- and indoors. Therefore director Frank Roor demanded a vehicle with a Euro 5 diesel engine, the best choice at this moment. With that engine, the Terberg YT222 terminal tractor can meet the Euro 5 exhaust emission standard without a particulate filter. It is therefore the best and most reliable way to burden the quality of the air as little as possible. This is important for the air quality in general and in particular for the people who work inside, in the production of the galvanizing. Moreover, it is a reliable solution. "We can’t afford unexpected downtime," says Frank Roor. "That is particularly the case for this Terberg terminal tractor. That vehicle fills a key position in our logistics operation."
Improved logistic operation
The environmentally friendly terminal tractor at Verzinkerij Heerhugowaard replaces a customized tractor. This transition resulted in a significant logistical improvement. Every day the terminal tractor moves at least twenty units. First the simplicity of lifting and lowering is a significant advantage. With the fifth wheel with hydraulic lift there is no more need to operate the support legs of the trailer. The trailer is, with the extended support legs, are simply slightly lifted and afterwards put down again. Moreover, the driver can easily couple and uncouple the air hoses, directly from the platform next to the cabin. The terminal tractor at Verzinkerij Heerhugowaard has a Cummins ISBe5-225 (Euro 5) six cylinder diesel engine with a displacement of 6.7 liters. The power source is equipped with SCR technology, Selective Catalytic Reduction. This is primarily intended to improve the quality of the exhaust gasses. It also has a positive impact on fuel consumption. The power source delivers 165 kW (221 hp). The engine is strong in a wide area. The maximum torque of 850 Nm is available from 1200 to 1600 rev / min. To ease the work of the driver when maneuvering, and for maximum traction, the tractor is equipped with an Allison automatic gearbox, type 3000, with four forward speeds. The automatic locking of the torque converter, Lock-Up, ensures that as little energy as possible is lost in the gearbox. That provision, standard for a Terberg, ensures the lowest friction losses and the best possible performance. Terberg Benschop is working to the utmost to provide the customer with a reliable product with the highest possible efficiency and lowest cost of ownership. This first YT222 Euro 5 shows that Terberg succeeds in this over and over again.
