Terberg Benschop has delivered 25 Terberg YT 182 4x2 terminal tractors to Kumport in Turkey. The first fifteen are taken into use in February 2010. They are so successful that now another ten units are on their way to the Kumport container terminal, in the port of Ambarli.
Kumport has fully deployed on the handling of containers since 1996 and used some Terberg terminal tractors. After the company was taken over by a new owner in 2007, the port decided to invest anew in the port machinery fleet. During the tender competition, Kumport compared Terberg tractors with vehicles built in the USA, which could be bought with a favorable dollar. "But to have the complete picture, Kumport decided to take into consideration the total cost of ownership," says H. Önder Türker, the Turkish Terberg distributor sales manager. Portunus Port Spares & Services started delivery and installation of port equipment, including terminal tractors from Terberg Benschop, in 1992. "It's really thanks to the quality of the machines that, after a lot of testing in real port conditions, Kumport decided to invest in terminal tractors of Terberg Benschop again. Kumport has chosen for Terberg YT 182 4x2 tractors in standard version, with Euromot 3A engines. They have proven to do the work well. "
Operating conditions
The machines operate under severe working conditions. After six months, the first shipment had worked already more than 3,000 hours. On average, the machines are in operation 21 to 22 hours per day, seven days a week, all year round. "On weekends there are no custom activities. Kumport uses this time to regroup containers," explains Önder Türker the high score. It's a very active port. The terminal has become one of the largest and most modern in Turkey. Factories in the surrounding area produce large quantities of goods that generate a lot of foreign trade. This is visible in the figures. In 2008, the Kumport terminal handled 13 percent of all of the container traffic in Turkey. Currently Kumport reinforces the capacity with investments in new gantry cranes and additional terminal tractors. This is also necessary because major shipping companies such as Maersk and Turkon have included the port of Ambarli in their regular service.”
